Turning Toward Healing – Guiding Clients Toward Self-Compassion

Updated: Aug 4

When someone loses a pet, the road to healing can feel long, winding, and full of emotional potholes. After the initial shock and heartbreak, many people find themselves stuck in a place of quiet shame holding onto guilt, regrets, or the belief that they should’ve done more.

This is where self-compassion becomes so important. But for many grieving pet owners, it’s also the hardest thing to access. It can feel indulgent, even selfish, to be gentle with yourself while you’re hurting. But in truth, self-compassion is the first step toward healing and veterinary teams and crematorium staff have a powerful opportunity to help clients begin that process.

What does self-compassion look like in the context of pet loss? It’s a grieving client allowing themselves to cry without apologizing. It’s recognizing that loving their pet doesn’t mean they have to be perfect. It’s learning to speak to themselves with the same tenderness they would show a friend.

You can help clients get there not by offering advice, but by offering presence. By being a steady, calm voice in the chaos. A lot of people don’t know how to be kind to themselves in grief, especially if they feel like they failed their pet. They need permission. They need someone to say:

“It’s okay to be sad.”

“You did the best you could.”

“They knew they were loved.”

These aren’t just comforting words. They’re life rafts.

In many cases, you are the last point of contact before a client is left to grieve on their own. That makes your role incredibly powerful. A small act of compassion in your space whether it’s a warm goodbye, a sympathy card, or even just a soft tone can plant the seed of self-compassion in a moment of deep pain.

Grief is not something to get over. It’s something to move through. And every time you remind a grieving pet owner that it’s okay to be human and that they don’t have to carry their guilt alone you’re helping them take a step toward healing.
